Tributo
La historia del RCA, que se inicia en la segunda década del Siglo XX, ha sido prestigiosa y plena de logros. Nuestra institución participó en numerosas Campañas Antárticas, según el testimonio que nos brindan las publicaciones especializadas de diversas épocas. Pero una de ellas en particular, merece hoy nuestro especial homenaje.
En 1955, al enterarse de los planes en marcha para el establecimiento de un puesto en las Islas Sandwich del Sur, el RCA propuso a la Armada realizar comunicaciones desde allí, como una forma de mostrar el mundo que la Argentina reconocía el archipiélago como propio.
La idea fue rápidamente aceptada, y elegidos para la empresa José Manuel Ahumada LU8CW -Mataco-, destacado DXer de la época, y Miguel Ángel Villafañe LU1DZJ, oficial marino mercante. Los acompañaría el Guardiamarina Ricardo Hermelo, oficial experimentado, hijo y nieto de antárticos.
Desde allí, durante los 30 días que permanecieron en el Refugio Teniente Esquivel de la Isla Thule, con las señales distintivas LU2ZY, LU3ZY y LU4ZY realizaron 1664 QSOs en AM y CW.

Tribute
The history of the RCA dates back to the second decade of the twentieth century, and it is full of prestige and achievements. Our institution has taken part in many Antarctic Campaigns, as has been acknowledged by specialized publications along the time. One of them deserves our special tribute.
The month of January marked the 60th Anniversary of the first radio operation of Argentina in the South Sandwich Islands.
In 1955, at learning that there were plans under way to establish a settlement in the South Sandwich Islands, the RCA suggested the Navy to make radio contacts from the islands, as a way of showing the world that Argentina claimed them as their own. The idea was accepted at once and José Manuel Ahumada LU8CW -Mataco-, a well-known Dxer, and Miguel Ángel Villafañe LU1DZJ, a merchant marine officer, were chosen to fulfill the commitment. The midshipman Ricardo Hermelo, an experienced officer, son and grandson of an Antarctic family accompanied them.
During the 30 days that they stayed in the Teniente Esquivel Refuge in the Thule Island, they made 1664 QSOs in AM and CW with the callsigns LU2ZY, LU3ZY and LU4ZY.
This expedition that the RCA is making from the Carlini Base in 2016 is a tribute to those men.
